Mangonui Health and Fitness

Whilst on holiday in the far north I had an insatiable urge for some gym time and found myself in Mangonui Health and Fitness.
The cost was $10 for a casual student pass and $15 for adults.
The gym itself is located up a bank in Doubtless Bay (Coopers Beach), it is fairly small with about 2 of each type of cardio machine, a rack of weights and swiss balls and a couple of benches for heavier weights, along with boxing bags and stationary weights machines.
The view from this gym is truly spectacular! The gym has windows running the length of all four walls so from its elevated vantage point you get a view of the entire bay and the ocean whilst working out! On warm days like the one when I was there they open the back wall which is also a large sliding door, this opens the back section up to the foliage behind the building and adds to the open-plan, fresh-air feel of the place.
Air con was limited to fans and music was emitted via a stereo and one of the staff member's ipods.
I was not around long enough to check out the classes they may run, but the atmosphere of the gym itself was lovely. I had also rung in beforehand and was told it was pretty busy..but upon arrival found only 4 people there.. I suppose this is one of the benefits of being used to a big city - being pleasantly surprised by another area's definition of busy!
The staff were friendly and unimposing.
Overall a very pleasant experience indeed.

  1. I recall having had the exact same great to experience in 2012, but today , december 2015 as i was traveling again through the far north i tried to have a work out and had the most bizarre experience. The lady at the counter must have been high on something, sweating and kept asking me wgat i want, looking fir her words, if i wanted a mvership, how much money i have, then said go away , ugh, what do you want again?
    It was really surreal.
Its a shame as i am here for a week and was looking forward training with a view!

    1. That its really bizarre Malika.
It's a shame you had that experience but if you could remember the date and time you came in the cctv footage could be pulled up and I bet the owner would be more than happy to help get to the bottom of the situation.

  2. Had the most unfortunate and disappointing display of "Far North couldn’t care less attitude” than I have experienced in a long time. I have belonged to this gym in the past and always had good experiences. Today, turned up to the gym, the hours on the door and the website said they were open – it was 11am. Everywhere was locked up. Called the mob number on the door 3 times (for access if gym closed). Half an hour after my last call, someone called Lance calls and asks “what’s up”. I explain I would like to be a casual member, and the gym is closed. He muttered something about 'the kids' and said he'd probably be in about 2pm. When I asked how I could get access as a casual member his curt response was 'you can't". And that was that. No apology, no suggestions for other days. Nothing. Disgusting customer service, false representation on the door and website and unless this gym changes hands I will never go back. My business on this occasion was worth $130 but clearly of no value to Lance.

  3. People live in the Far North to pursuit a particular type of life style. It's not a good place to get rich. Most business people are merely supporting a fantastic lifestyle and don't have need for astronomical turn-overs.
There are a variety of ways to call a Far North business person to action. Unknown, you might of considered informing Lance that his Gym appeared to be on fire. You'd be inside and sweating inside 90 seconds. "Oh sorry, must of been steam."
